1A/2A Indoor Track and Field State Championships: Friday, February 11, 2022 was the State 1A/2A Indoor Track and Field State Championships at Winston-Salem’s JDL Fast Track. Pender High School had two students to qualify for the Championships. They were Daisy Hearn in the wheel chair shot put and Olivia Gurganus in the high jump. Indoor track and field competitions are very different from outdoor competitions with the main differences being in the amount of noise, the close quarters, and the air.
PHS’s sophomore competitor was Olivia Gurganus who competed in the high jump. She scratched on all three attempts at her first height, an NH. Even though she is a sophomore, Olivia gained valuable experience for future indoor competitions.
PHS’s senior competitor was Daisy Hearn who competed in the wheel chair shot put. She won the 1A/2A State Championship in the wheel chair shot put with a shot just under 10 ft. Her winning PR was 9ft 11.5 in.
Both girls are to be congratulated for making it to the 1A/2A State Championships. Way to go Pender Patriots!
