Last week, Mr. Smith's CTE class at West Pender Middle School had the privilege of hosting a guest speaker from Cape Fear Community College’s (CFCC) Community Spanish Interpreter program. This visit, made possible through our valued partnership with CFCC and their Career Academy program, provided an educational experience for our 8th-grade students.
The guest speaker shared insights into the world of language interpreting and highlighted the diverse career opportunities available within the field. Students learned how interpreters play a crucial role in bridging communication gaps in various professional settings, such as healthcare, education, and business. The session not only expanded students' understanding of potential career paths but also emphasized the vital communication and language skills needed to succeed in the interpreting profession.
To make the learning experience interactive, students participated in engaging activities designed to challenge their memorization and both verbal and non-verbal communication skills. These exercises gave them a firsthand look at the complexities and rewards of interpreting, fostering an appreciation for the skill and precision the job entails.
This enriching visit was part of the CFCC Career Academy program’s broader mission to support middle school students by offering extended opportunities to explore career and technical education pathways. A collaborative effort between Cape Fear Community College and Pender County Schools, the Career Academy program provides access to CFCC's campus resources, expert faculty, and diverse programs, empowering students to envision their future careers.
We are grateful for the dedication and support of the CFCC Career Academy team. Their efforts help bring practical, real-world learning experiences to our students, fueling curiosity and ambition.
