[Burgaw, NC] – [09/06/2023] – West Pender Middle School is thrilled to announce that our esteemed 8th-grade math teacher, Jason Throckmorton, has been selected as the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Outstanding Secondary Mathematics Teacher for the 2022-2023 academic year. Mr. Throckmorton's dedication and commitment to fostering excellence in mathematics education have earned him this prestigious recognition.
Mr. Throckmorton will have the opportunity to attend the NCCTM Annual Conference that will take place at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from November 9th to 10th, 2023. This conference promises to be an exciting opportunity for educators and math enthusiasts to engage in the latest advancements in the field. One of the conference's highlights will be the NCCTM Awards Ceremony, where Mr. Throckmorton and other outstanding teachers will be honored for their exceptional contributions to mathematics education. The NCCTM Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, November 9th, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. As part of this honor, Mr. Throckmorton will receive a complimentary one-year membership in NCCTM, further emphasizing his status as an exemplary educator in North Carolina.
Mr. Throckmorton's teaching philosophy, "I believe all students can learn. It is my goal to help students realize that productive struggle is a friend, rather than an enemy. In addition to his exceptional work in the classroom, Mr. Throckmorton serves as a mentor to beginning teachers, sharing his expertise and passion for mathematics education with the next generation of educators. His dedication to supporting and nurturing new talent in the teaching profession further underscores his commitment to excellence.
This year marks a significant milestone in Mr. Throckmorton's career, as he celebrates his 20th year in education. His dedication to improving the lives of students through mathematics education has remained unwavering throughout his two-decade-long journey. Mr. Throckmorton embarked on his teaching journey at West Pender Middle School in 2017. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in K-6 Education from Lees-McRae College, earned in 2002, and a Master's Degree in K-12 Reading Education from Appalachian State University, conferred in 2010. Over the years, he has expanded his expertise, obtaining a teaching license in Grades 6-9 Mathematics. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Throckmorton enjoys his spare time on the beach and visiting family and friends in the Winston-Salem area.

WPMS, originally an elementary school erected in 1957, later transitioned to a middle school to accommodate changes in district lines and the opening of new elementary schools.
