As we continue celebrating Youth Art Month, we’re excited to showcase Lucy Tracy, a 6th grader whose passion for art and extracurricular activities shines brightly and whose artistic talent runs in the family.
✨ A Few Fun Facts About Lucy:
✅ Has been riding horses for 5 years 🐎
✅ Started competing this year in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) horse shows and qualified for Regionals in her first year! 🏅🏇🏻
✅ Loves to run and plans to join Cross Country and Track in high school 🏃🏼♀️
✅ She is the 3rd sibling in her family to have Mrs. Berdeau as an art teacher 🎨❤️
✅ She will be the 4th and last sibling to graduate from Surf City Middle School 🎓🦈
✅ Her mom is a talented watercolor artist, inspiring Lucy’s own love of art 🎨🖌️

Ava Hill, an 8th grader with a passion for blending creativity and skill, is an artist whose dedication shines in and out of the classroom. Ava’s love for both realism and cartooning allows her to explore a wide range of styles, and her artistic interests continue to grow. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and has been riding horses for the past 8 years, balancing her love for art with her many other talents.

🖌️ A Little Bit About Emmalee:
Emmalee has taken art in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, including Advanced Art this year. Outside of school, she enjoys playing with her dog, attending youth group at church, working on her art projects, and spending time at the beach.
🎨 Emmalee’s favorite medium is chalk pastels, and while she doesn’t have a favorite artist, she admires Katsushika Hokusai (famous for The Great Wave) for his unique style.
🎼 A Talented Musician Too!
In addition to her artistic achievements, Emmalee has played the clarinet in the SCM Band for the past 3 years, showcasing her dedication to both the visual and performing arts.
🌟 A Full Circle Moment:
In 6th grade, Emmalee was selected as the Pender Spring Fest Artist for the 2023 T-shirt design. Now, as she wraps up her middle school art career, she’s ending on a high note by winning the Pender Humane Society T-Shirt Contest—a perfect bookend to her artistic journey at Surf City Middle!

The 2025 Azalea Festival Youth Art and Writing Contests Showcase opens THIS THURSDAY, March 27th and runs through April 27th at the Community Arts Center (CAC), located in the Hannah Block Historic USO Building at 120 S. 2nd St., Wilmington, NC (for GPS).
✨ Ribbon Cutting Event:
📅 Date: Thursday, March 27th
⏰ Time: 5:30 PM (Ribbon Cutting at 5:45 PM)
🏢 Location: Community Arts Center (CAC), 2nd and Orange Streets, Downtown Wilmington
What to Expect:
🎨 Enjoy an incredible display of artwork from talented Elementary, Middle, and High School students, including artwork from top Youth Art Contest winners.
📝 Explore the top Middle School Writing Contest poems and essays.
🍪 Light refreshments (cookies and punch) will be served.
📸 Take pictures with Azalea Princess Mia Volety and Cape Fear Garden Club Ambassadors.
⚠️ Can't make it to the ribbon cutting? No worries! The showcase runs for the entire month of April.

This is Ruth’s second year in art at Surf City Middle, and she chose to take Advanced Art this year to continue creating and exploring her artistic skills all year long. Last year, she was honored with an Apprentice Artist Award for her dedication and creativity.

About the Contests:
Since its inception in 2010, the Azalea Festival Youth Art Contest has showcased thousands of budding young artists across the state. Open to students in grades K-12, including homeschool, private, and public school students, the contest receives hundreds of entries each year. Similarly, the Youth Writing Contest recognizes the exceptional literary talent of young writers across North Carolina.
