Good afternoon Rocky Point Families,

We are in our final week of the first nine weeks of the school year.  Please have conversations with your child to ensure they have completed and submitted all assignments for this first quarter.  We are averaging approximately 25 tardies each week.  Please let us know how we can help eliminate barriers in order to help your child arrive at school on time and limit missed instructional time.

The Pender Mobile Dental Clinic is at Rocky Point Elementary School for its final week.  The clinic provides routine and basic dental treatment to ALL interested students, parents and staff.  If you would like to take advantage of the convenient, quality dental services, please complete the form sent home with your child and return it to their teacher or call 910-471-3250.  Due to the limited time at each school, please respond at your earliest convenience.  Again, the mobile dental unit will be at RPES through this Friday, October 21st.

We are in our final week of preparations for our Hispanic Heritage Celebration and fundraising event this Saturday, October 22 at Heide Trask High School with food beginning to be sold at 4:00 and dance performances beginning around 6:00pm.  Admission will be a donation of $5.00 per car.  If your child would like to participate in a dance performance at this event, please bring them to Rocky Point Elementary School on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:15pm.  As was sent home in our flyer, we are asking for donations of drinks and candy to support this event.  These donations can be sent in with your child and brought into the main office.  We are looking forward to great food and fun with our community at this event as we also fundraise to support all of our Rocky Point schools.

Tomorrow, Monday, October 17, students will be bringing home a letter to inform families that Rocky Point Elementary School has been designated as a Low Performing School by the North Carolina State Board of Education.  School Performance Grades are based 80 percent on our school’s achievement score and 20 percent on students’ academic growth.  With this in mind, I would like to share with you that all subgroups at Rocky Point Elementary School met growth during the 21-22 school year on math, reading and science EOGs.  Additionally, our achievement scores are equivalent or above the state average in mathematics and science.   Please know that there is nothing more important to administrators and teachers at our school than ensuring students are ready for the next step in their academic careers.  We look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure all students continue to be on track for success.

Looking ahead, please note that Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25 are teacher workdays with no school for students.  Additionally, we have fall picture makeups on Tuesday, November 1st.

In honor of our final week of Hispanic American Heritage Month, I am sharing a quote from Ruby Garcia:  We can choose to be a character in a story written by someone else or we can choose to be the author of our own story.”  As always, thank you for your continued support and we hope to see everyone on Saturday at our Hispanic Heritage celebration and fundraising event.  Have a great week!
