Our 3rd graders have been exploring the meaning of home in Module 3 Wit & Wisdom “A New Home”. Through captivating books and rich discussions, students are learning about immigration, challenges people face when moving to a new place, and what it takes to build a sense of belonging. They are analyzing characters’ experiences, making connections to the real world, and expressing their understanding through writing. It’s amazing to see their empathy and critical thinking grow! 

SayGrandfather's Journey by Allen Say is the story of a man who travels to California, gets married, has a daughter, and then goes back to Japan after his daughter is nearly grown. He plans a trip back to California, but World War 2 intervenes. His grandson, however, goes back to California and feels a similar pull to both countries.

Coming to America: The Story of Immigration by Betsy Maestro is the history of American immigration from the Asian land bridge to the 190os is one of determination and struggle, but not without pain. But for immigrants past and present, hope, the belief in a better life, and the allure of contributing to this nation prevails. Leads to appreciation for our nation’s history.

WorkingThe Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco is a story about 4 generations of immigrant Jewish families the unique quilt that warps all the generations together.
