All Fifth graders traveled on a field trip to Masonboro Island on Sept. 25. They explored a variety of ecosystems such as saltwater marshes, sand dunes, and mudflats, which prepared students for their science unit focusing on our new Smithsonian Science curriculum standards. Students also got to catch crabs, build their own mini ecosystems, and identify various types of shells.
In addition, fifth grade classes conducted an experiment with S'mores enabling them to have a hands-on experience about heat transfer, states of matter, and physical/chemical changes. Students enjoyed getting to see how heat transfer causes chemical changes in the marshmallows while enjoying a tasty treat!
The fifth grade students and teachers had a wonderful time at our Hispanic Heritage Festival celebrating the cultures of different countries. They enjoying the wonderful artwork, dancing, and food provided by Rocky Point students and families fostering an even stronger school community.
