Fourth grade students were fortunate to be able to take a field trip to experience the 2023 Waccamaw Siouan Pow Wow in October. This was the 52nd year of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe celebrating their culture and traditions during the Pow Wow. This field trip helped our students understand the role various people, events, and ideas have in shaping North Carolina.

Students learned traditional tribe dances which are often part of ceremonies, storytelling, and celebrations. They also learned about how the tribe made traditional pottery making in the area and then were able to make their own pieces of pottery.

Students were informed about how the 3 sister plants of (corn, beans, and squash) work together to keep each other strong and protected. Corn provides a tall structure for the beans to climb. Beans fix nitrogen in the soil, which benefits the corn and squash. Squash gives a broad ground cover, stopping weeds and helping retain moisture in the soil.
