ROCKY POINT, NC - In the heart of Rocky Point Elementary School, the halls resonate with more than just laughter and learning. They echo with the diverse beats and melodies of cultures worldwide, thanks to the tireless efforts of their Music Teacher, Laura Black.
This year, the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) crowned Laura Black as the Elementary Teacher of the Year, a well-deserved honor for her dedication and innovation in music education. Her passion for instilling a love for music in young hearts has not only shone through in her teachings but also in her relentless pursuit of opportunities to broaden students' horizons.
"Ms. Black's dedication to music education at Rocky Point Elementary exemplifies the essence of our commitment to providing enriching, diverse learning experiences for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove. “Her recognition as the 2023 North Carolina Music Educators Association Elementary Teacher of the Year is a testament to her unwavering passion and the school's commitment to fostering a love for music that transcends borders."
In a recent milestone for the school's music program, a $9,300 grant from the Landfall Foundation is set to enrich the educational experience at Rocky Point Elementary. The "World Music Drumming" project, spearheaded by Laura Black, aims to immerse students in the vibrant tapestry of global musical traditions. With the purchase of 15 tubano drums and seven bass bars, students will embark on a musical journey, learning about diverse cultures through their melodies and rhythms.
Laura Black expressed her excitement, saying, “This grant will allow our students to explore the rich tapestry of music from around the world. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our young musicians to broaden their horizons and discover the beauty of global music traditions.”
But this is not the only accolade the music program has earned. Earlier in the year, Rocky Point Elementary stood out among 29 schools in the Michael & Son’s Services Jingle Sing-Off contest, winning a grand prize of $5,000. These funds will be instrumental in bolstering the Rocky Point Elementary Orchestra program, nurturing the musical talents of the students.
Moreover, the recent $1,000 grant from The Mockingbird Foundation further amplifies the school's commitment to fostering musical excellence.
"Ms. Black’s leadership in expanding our music program has been truly remarkable,” said Rocky Point Elementary Principal April Perkins. “Her innovative initiatives not only enrich the students' understanding of global musical traditions but also instill in them a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. We are extremely proud of the achievements of our music program under her guidance."
