Word of the Week
This week’s Word of the Week will be Illustrate. Illustrate means to make something clear or visible using pictures or examples.
Please re-enforce the use of this word at home.
Athletic Throwback Night
Come out to the old Penderlea School gymnasium THIS FRIDAY February 28th, from 6 PM to 9 PM for a Throwback Night!
It will be an evening filled with nostalgia as we have our current Hornet basketball team take on an Alumni team!
There will be concessions, old jerseys, and an Alumni shirt available for purchase! Admission is $5.
If you’re interested in playing or cheering in the game for the “Alumni Team”, please contact Mrs. Umphress (ashley_umphress@pender.k12.nc.us).
Read Across America Week
Read Across America Week is the first week of March(March 3rd through March 6th)! If you would like to get involved by reading to a class, please reach out to your child’s teacher or reach out to the front office at pls_info@pender.k12.nc.us

Science Olympiad
Congratulations to all students who participated in this past weekend's Science Olympiad! A special congratulations to the following students for placing in their respective events:
Degan Whaley and Marissa Lizardo won 1st place in the duct tape challenge.
Evan Jones and Miles Jones won 2nd place in Ramp and Roll.
Marilynn Mitchell and Jocelyn Atkinson won 3rd place in Super Sleuths.
Save the Date for Penderlea Day
Mark your calendars for Penderlea Day! This special community event will take place on April 12th from 10 AM to 2 PM. If you would like to help with planning or working this event, please reach out to the front office at pls_info@pender.k12.nc.us
PCS Student Dress Code Policy Review
Pender County Schools is reviewing its 2011 dress code and seeks student, parent, and staff feedback via a survey (questions linked below).
This survey will close for students, staff and parents on February 28th.
Reassignment Request
Pender County Schools is accepting reassignment requests for the 2025-2026 school year from February 1, 2025 to March 31, 2025. Requests are for schools outside your assigned zone, excluding Pender Early College and PILA.

Attendance Announcements
Congratulations to Mrs. Umphress’, and Mrs. Anderson’s classes for hitting the first tier of the attendance incentives. This means that each class had 95 percent of students attend 10 or more days since the start of the new semester!
Congratulations to Mrs. Cutshaw’s class for hitting the second tier of attendance incentives! This means that this class has had 95 percent of students attend 20 or more days since the start of the new semester!

February 25th- Away basketball game at Burgaw MS
Girls start at 4:30PM, boys play directly after.
February 27th- Away basketball game at Topsail MS
Girls start at 4:30PM, boys play directly after.
Volleyball and Baseball Tryouts
Penderlea volleyball and baseball tryouts are right around the corner!
Volleyball tryouts will be held March 3rd after school until 5pm.
Baseball tryouts will be held March 3rd and 4th after school until 5pm.
Please make sure your athlete has signed up on the middle school board if they are interested in trying out! They must have a current physical on file, have all forms completed in BigTeams, and have met all attendance and academic requirements for the previous semester to be eligible.
We will have one final parent meeting. It is REQUIRED that a parent and the athlete attend ONE parent meeting per year. IF you and your athlete have not attended a parent meeting yet and they want to tryout for baseball or volleyball, please plan to attend the meeting on Monday, March 3rd at 5pm.
Job Shadowing Day
PCS Job Shadowing Day is this Friday 2/28! Deadline for application has been extended till Wednesday 2/26. See attached flier for details.
Please note that this event is only for 7th through 12th graders.
For 8th grade students who do not plan to participate in the Job Shadowing, we will have a virtual career bus on campus for them to explore during a specific time.
