Students Explore Creativity and Math Skills During Winter Intersession

This winter, students in grades 3-8 engaged in a variety of interactive and educational activities as part of their Winter Intersession program. Designed to combine fun with learning, the program included opportunities for students to practice their reading, math, and STEM skills in innovative ways.

Readers' Theater Brings Stories to Life

One of the highlights of the intersession was the students' participation in readers' theater activities. By practicing their scripts, the kids not only improved their reading fluency and expression but also developed confidence in public speaking and teamwork. These engaging sessions turned reading practice into a dynamic and collaborative experience.

Mastering Math Through Engagement

Students worked on honing their math fact fluency and tackling multi-step word problems, with activities tailored to their grade levels. To make math more engaging, educators incorporated platforms like GIMKIT and Blooket, which gamify learning and encourage students to solve problems in an interactive and competitive environment. These tools added an element of excitement and motivated students to master complex concepts.

STEM Class: Building Gingerbread Houses with Precision

The STEM component of the program took hands-on learning to new heights. Students practiced measuring square feet, area, and perimeter by designing and constructing their own gingerbread houses. The project began with students sketching out their ideas on paper, followed by creating 3D digital designs using TinkerCAD, a popular computer-aided design tool. Once their plans were finalized, they brought their designs to life by building physical models of their gingerbread houses. This multi-step process helped students apply math concepts in real-world scenarios while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

The Winter Intersession program successfully blended academics with creativity, leaving students with new skills and memorable experiences. Activities like these not only reinforce classroom learning but also inspire a lifelong love for discovery and innovation.
