Update

Good evening Penderlea Families,

What an amazing first week we’ve had! It has been wonderful to see students engaged in their work, hear from parents excited about the school year, and witness the hard work of our teachers paying off.

Here are some important updates and reminders for the upcoming week:

BETA Club Meeting Any parents of current Beta Members, the first meeting of the year will be Monday, July 22nd at 4:30 PM in the library. This meeting is for both students and parents. If you are unable to attend in person, please reach out to Mrs. Finn or Mrs. Kolb for a virtual link.

Back-to-School Bingo Night Our Beta Club will be hosting its very first Back-to-School Bingo Night on August 2nd! This event is open to anyone in the community who would like to attend. Doors will open at 5:30 PM, with games beginning at 6:00 PM. There will be games for students as well as adults, with fun, food, and prizes in store! We hope to see you all there!

Athletics Meeting Any Parents/Guardians of athletes who plan to try out for fall cheer, softball, or football MUST attend a meeting on Tuesday, August 6th at 5:30pm in the Penderlea School media center. You will need a copy (or photo) of the athlete's up to date sports physical as well as your athlete with you for this meeting. During the meeting we will be completing all needed paperwork together, creating your athlete's BigTeams account, along with giving needed information for the upcoming season.

We will hold meetings at a later date for soccer, basketball, winter cheer, baseball, and volleyball.

Backpack Program Penderlea will once again be offering the weekly backpack program for students. This program is sponsored by local churches in Pender County for our families that have a financial need. The bags normally contain some snacks and items. Please email Mrs. Burdette at lisa_burdette@pender.k12.nc.us if you would like for your child to participate. Please include your child's name and grade level. This program will begin in early August.

Read to Achieve Testing As part of the Read to Achieve legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2012, all 3rd Grade students will take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 English Language Arts/Reading Test to establish a baseline measure of how he or she is reading. This test will be administered on July 23rd, 2024. Following the test administration, you will receive an individual student report with your child's score. As you review the report, make notes about your child’s test score and other questions you may have. Be sure to discuss your questions with your child's teacher when you attend a parent-teacher-student conference. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the school.

mClass and Diagnostic Testing This week, students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade will also be taking the mClass assessments, which measure reading ability. Additionally, we will be conducting a reading and math diagnostic, for all students, to better understand each student's needs and progress. These assessments are crucial for tailoring instruction to help every student succeed.

Mobile Dental Clinic The Mobile Dental Clinic will be on campus from July 15th to August 22nd. Please be on the lookout for more information to come home with your child.

Kindergarten Drop-Off We understand the importance of a smooth transition for our youngest learners. For the coming week, we will continue to allow kindergarten families to walk their students to their classrooms. This practice helps build comfort and confidence in our new students. To support independence though, we ask that only kindergarten families walk their kindergarten students, and this will be for this coming week only. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work together to foster independence in our kindergarteners.

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out via email at stephen_harris@pender.k12.nc.us or call the school at 910-285-2761.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Together will continue to make Penderlea the Place to Be!
