For 8th grade students and families:

8th graders will begin their four year planning for high school during social studies class on 1/15 and 1/16. This is part of the state's legislation for all students in middle and high school to create individual graduation plans for students to ensure postsecondary success. Students will begin their plan on Major Clarity, an app that is accessible on ClassLink. Ask them to show this to you! This is a planning document, separate registration information for high school electives will be shared at a later date.

8th graders will visit Heide Trask High School on February 4th from 8:30am-10:30am. A permission slip was handed out to students on 1/8. Students must have permission slips signed and returned by 2/4 to attend.

Pender Early College High School applications are due to Ms. Bowman or Ms. Miller by January 24th.

Book Study - Starting next week, during Grizzly Time, your child will be reading Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli in class.

Why Stargirl?

Stargirl is an excellent literary work that encourages students to reflect on themes such as:

  • Individuality, peer pressure, empathy, kindness, and resilience, friendship and personal growth

These themes offer valuable opportunities for meaningful classroom discussions and personal reflection.

How Can You Support Your Child?

We encourage you to engage in conversations with your child about the book as they progress through the chapters. Discussing the themes, characters, and lessons in the story can help enhance their understanding and critical thinking skills. Feel free to ask them about the characters and what they think about Stargirl’s actions, choices, and values.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like additional information about the book or the unit, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your continued support in your child's education!
