New Hanover County, NC - Students from Pender County Schools recently demonstrated their mathematical skills at the Southeastern NC Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition, held on February 8, 2025, at Emma B. Trask Middle School in New Hanover County.

Two teams proudly represented the district—Burgaw Middle School and Topsail Middle School—and delivered outstanding performances. Their hard work and dedication were on full display as they competed against some of the best young mathematicians in the region.

The Burgaw Middle School team was led by Coach Cathy Spano, with Brandy Edwards, Interventionist, serving as the team liaison. Topsail Middle School was represented under the guidance of liaison Rebecca Morr, math teacher.

A special congratulations goes to Cavan Mastro from Topsail Middle School, who finished first overall in the individual competition and won the final round among the top 10 competitors. This achievement qualifies him to compete in the MATHCOUNTS State Finals, where he will represent Pender County Schools at the next level.

We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated in this challenging competition. Their success reflects their commitment to problem-solving, critical thinking, and academic excellence.

Best of luck to Cavan Mastro as he advances to the state competition!
