HAMPSTEAD, NC - Topsail High School Athletics Department has selected Coach Chris Schmidt as the ninth Head Football Coach in school history. Schmidt had served as the interim Head Coach following the departure of Coach Jack Teachey, who accepted a position as Senior Defensive Analyst at Texas Tech University. Prior to his interim role, Coach Schmidt served as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Pirates Football Program. He also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director and teaches English III and Journalism.
“I’m humbled and excited to be named the permanent Head Coach for Topsail Football,” Schmidt said. “This program will continue to be built on the ideals of servant leadership and competitive excellence, and we will represent this community with respect and pride.”
Before coming to Topsail, Coach Schmidt spent three years coaching at Cleveland High School in Clayton, NC, where he was the Head JV Coach and Linebackers Coach for the football program. Under his leadership, the JV team went 26-1 over three seasons and won three consecutive conference titles. A native of Upstate New York, Coach Schmidt also coached at three different high schools and spent parts of two seasons at his alma mater, Ithaca College, before moving to North Carolina in 2019. He and his wife, Danielle, live in Hampstead with their son, Brock, and their three dogs.
We are confident that Coach Schmidt will uphold the high expectations of our THS Pirates Football program, with a continued emphasis on student-athlete success both on and off the field.
