April marks School Library Month, a national celebration with roots dating back to 1985 when the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) first launched the observance. Spearheaded by Lucille Thomas and her dedicated committee, the month was created to recognize the vital role school libraries and librarians play in education. With the theme “Where Learning Never Ends,” the inaugural event kicked off on the steps of the U.S. Capitol and has grown into a nationwide celebration of literacy, learning, and library leadership.
Here in Pender County Schools, we proudly celebrate the incredible impact of our school media coordinators. These professionals are more than book curators—they are champions of student growth, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading. Their work supports academic achievement, fosters digital literacy, and creates welcoming spaces where students can explore ideas and discover new passions.
As the AASL reminds us, “The heart of the library isn’t just its books. It’s the people who make it a welcoming, enriching place to learn and explore.” We thank our media coordinators for being the heart of our schools and for shaping the minds and futures of our students every single day.
