PENDER COUNTY, NC – Pender County Schools has been awarded a competitive SparkNC grant, funded by The Leon Levine Foundation, to empower students with hands-on learning in high-tech fields. “We’re excited to welcome Pender County Schools to the SparkNC network,” announced SparkNC in a recent statement. “This partnership will provide students with hands-on, high-tech learning experiences and new opportunities to explore careers in high tech. With SparkNC, Pender County Schools is paving the way for students to develop future-ready skills and thrive in an ever-evolving world.”
The SparkNC initiative offers students an innovative approach to education, allowing them to explore high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development, and game design. Unlike traditional courses, SparkNC provides flexible, student-centered pathways where learners choose their own projects and progress at their own pace.
Key Program Features
Personalized Learning Pathways: Students select from a menu of learning experiences—including live sessions with industry experts, experiential internships, and on-demand projects—tailored to their interests and career goals.
Credit Toward Graduation: Participants who complete an orientation, six units of study, and a capstone project earn elective course credit toward high school graduation.
Flexible Scheduling: The program is not tied to the school day or calendar, allowing students to learn at their own pace and on their own time.
Digital Portfolios: Students showcase their work through personalized digital portfolios that demonstrate technical skills and problem-solving abilities to future employers or colleges.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to preparing students for high-growth careers,” said Dr. Brad Breedlove, Pender County Schools Superintendent. “SparkNC’s innovative model ensures our rural community remains competitive in the tech-driven economy.”
The program, which will launch in the 2025-2026 school year, also emphasizes collaboration across districts through its interdistrict network of learners. Students will have access to live units led by SparkLab Leaders and industry experts, as well as experiential opportunities such as conferences, internships, and job shadowing.
