PENDER COUNTY, NC - Pender County Schools is proud to welcome Dr. Sonya Oates as the new Director of Elementary Education. Dr. Oates, a seasoned educator and administrator, brings a wealth of experience, passion, and a commitment to lifelong learning to her new role.

A native of Wilmington, Dr. Oates has served in various educational capacities over her career, including teacher assistant, teacher, assistant principal, and most recently, principal of Cape Fear Elementary School. Her deep understanding of the needs of elementary students and educators has been honed through her leadership in Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties.

Dr. Oates’ academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, teacher certification from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, a master’s degree from Gardner-Webb University, and a Doctorate in Administration from High Point University. Her personal commitment to lifelong learning exemplifies her dedication to inspiring students and staff to continually grow and achieve.

“I believe in leading through knowledge, serving through best practices, and collaborating with all stakeholders to support the goals of our school system,” said Dr. Oates. “A collaborative school environment is key to creating successful teachers and students, and partnerships with parents and the community are essential to enriching the educational experience.”

Dr. Oates is also a proud wife and mother of three children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, singing, and spending time with her family.

As Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Oates will work closely with principals, teachers, and staff to ensure high-quality instruction and enriching opportunities for all elementary students in Pender County Schools. Her leadership and collaborative approach will play a vital role in the district's mission to inspire and empower every student.
