PENDER COUNTY, NC - Pender County Schools is excited to announce new steps to better prepare students for life beyond high school, starting with the 2024-2025 school year. In response to recent legislation, all students will now be required to have a Career Development Plan (CDP) as part of their educational journey. This initiative is designed to help students plan for their future and ensure they are on track to become enrolled in higher education, enlisted in the military, or employed upon graduation.

What is the Career Development Plan (CDP)?

The CDP is a structured approach that will guide students toward their post-graduation goals, ensuring they take proactive steps in their education. Beginning in certain grades, students must have a CDP in place to be promoted, giving them the opportunity to think critically about their future and map out a clear path.

Special Requirements for New Students

Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, any student new to Pender County Schools will be required to develop a CDP within 90 days of enrollment. This ensures that every student, no matter when they enter our district, is given the same level of guidance and support toward a successful future.

Supporting Student Success

Our district is committed to working collaboratively across multiple departments to ensure every student has the support they need. Teachers, counselors, school principals, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) leadership will work together to create and implement these plans, providing a strong network of guidance and resources for students.

“We believe that these Career Development Plans will help our students take control of their futures with confidence,” said Dominique Bates, CTE Director for Pender County Schools. “By starting these conversations early and providing structured support, we are setting our students up for long-term success.”

For more information about the new CDP requirements or how they will impact your child, please contact CTE Director Dominique Bates or visit the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction website.

Pender County Schools remains committed to giving every student the tools they need to thrive both in school and in life.
