HAMPSTEAD, N.C. - Topsail High School honored the memory of a beloved teacher and coach on Monday, renaming its main gymnasium the "Coach Jamie Rochelle Gymnasium" in a ceremony that drew a large crowd of community members, students, and staff.
The dedication, held at 5 p.m., celebrated the life and legacy of James "Jamie" Rochelle, a physical education teacher and coach who passed away unexpectedly in June 2023. Rochelle, a Topsail High alumnus, had served his alma mater for 15 years, coaching golf, football, and basketball, as well as teaching driver's education and participating in various extracurricular activities.
The renaming initiative was spearheaded by students, notably Peyton Schlossnagle, highlighting the strong connection between Rochelle and the student body. Page McGraw, another student leader, spoke at the event, further emphasizing the impact Rochelle had on the school community.
Ed Rochelle, Jamie's father, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. "We've tried so many times to describe the outpouring of support we've received from this community. We're in awe," he said. The elder Rochelle also shared a poignant sentiment about his son's lasting presence, stating, "I see Jamie every day."
The well-attended ceremony underscored Rochelle's significance to the Topsail High School community. Students, faculty, and community members gathered to pay tribute to a man who had dedicated his career to shaping young lives through education and athletics.
"It's clear that Coach Rochelle's influence extended far beyond the gymnasium. His commitment to his students exemplified the very best of what Pender County Schools strive for." said Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove. "By renaming the gymnasium in his honor, the school has ensured that his legacy of mentorship, passion, and excellence will continue to inspire our community for generations to come."
