2024 TOPSAIL HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING INVESTIGATION

PENDER COUNTY, NC – The Pender County Board of Education has released a redacted version of its independent investigator's report regarding the Topsail High School wrestling program. This action reflects the Board's commitment to transparency and accountability in response to recent concerns about the program.

The outcome of the investigation found "substantial evidence that there was sufficient cause for termination of Coach Smith, as an at-will employee or otherwise."

"The board is taking this unprecedented step to ensure we can maintain the confidence of our constituents, and help all stakeholders understand the seriousness with which the board has confronted this situation," commented Board Chairman Don Hall.

Following the investigator's findings, the Board of Education has taken disciplinary action against eight employees, including Coach Pete Smith, for negligence and/or misconduct in the performance of their duties related to the Topsail High School wrestling program.
