HAMPSTEAD, N.C. — South Topsail Elementary School (STES) addressed a vital need for students in their Exceptional Children (EC) program by organizing a sensory-focused event named "Sensory Sensation" in April, coinciding with Autism Awareness Month.

The idea for the event was initially presented by a parent of an ECEC student, who recognized the importance of sensory activities in supporting students' needs. Principal Kathryn Bates followed up on the idea during a Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) meeting. Parents expressed enthusiasm for sensory activities, prompting the event's planning.

"Sensory Sensation" took place on April 5th at South Topsail Elementary School in Hampstead, NC. Over 100 attendees, including families, teachers, and community members, participated in the event, fostering a sense of inclusion and support for students with sensory needs. The event's success highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in providing inclusive opportunities for all students.

"We are thrilled to have hosted the 'Sensory Sensation' event at South Topsail Elementary School.” Said Principal Kathryn Bates. “It was heartwarming to see the community come together to support our students with sensory needs. Events like these not only provide valuable resources but also foster a sense of inclusion and understanding within our school community."

Volunteers, including STES teachers and community members, manned sensory stations, providing interactive experiences tailored to the needs of students with sensory sensitivities. The event was also supported by various departments at the district level.

The event received overwhelming support from the community, including the parent behind the idea who donated a pair of gift baskets. Approximately 20 vendors also offered their assistance. These vendors provided valuable resources and information to families, further enriching the event experience.
