GREENSBORO, NC - Topsail High School junior Ian Fritz won the Class 4A State Championship this past Saturday, becoming just the second two-time wrestling champion in Topsail High School history (Aric McCutcheon, 2010, 2011).
After opening with 24-7 and 19-2 wins in the first two rounds, Fritz earned a 15-5 decision over a wrestler with only one previous loss. The win set up a Mideastern Conference showdown with Laney's Tristan Cotto. The two had never previously met in a match.
Fritz (47-3) defeated Cotto (42-6) with an 11-3 decision to earn the 4A Title. In the three-day event, Fritz outscored his opponents 69-17.
Having committed to N.C. State, Fritz will enter his senior season with a record of 141-8.
"What many people see and hear about is the end result, in this case Ian’s second state championship," said coach Pete Smith. "What most don’t see are the countless hours spent outside the practice room in the off-season, or the early morning weight lifting sessions, or the work ethic displayed throughout the season. Ian is the hardest worker on the team and has earned every one of his numerous awards and accolades throughout his 3-year career."
