HAMPSTEAD, NC - A pair of talented musicians from the Topsail Marching Band have earned coveted spots to perform with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade's Great American Marching Band.
Sophomore Samuel Casamalhuapa, a tenor saxophonist, is extremely excited about this incredible opportunity. "I am very thrilled to participate in the Macy's Day Parade," beams Samuel. "I am grateful for the guidance, instruction, and opportunities I have been provided by the Topsail Marching Band."
Senior Shayne Hughes, a skilled clarinetist, is no stranger to the grandeur of the Macy's parade. This will be Shayne's third consecutive year marching with the Great American Marching Band. Despite a challenging start due to COVID-19 during her first year, Shayne has emerged as a seasoned performer. "My first year being accepted, I had no marching experience due to COVID-19," shares Shayne. Undeterred, she has not only honed her musical skills but also forged friendships with fellow musicians from states like South Dakota, West Virginia, Texas, Missouri, and beyond. Apart from music, she's explored NYC's vibrant streets, watched Broadway shows, and enjoyed the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular.
The Topsail Marching Band takes immense pride in Samuel and Shayne's accomplishments, showcasing the dedication and talent within their program. "We are incredibly excited for our program and students to be part of this wonderful opportunity," said Band Director Jake Wentzek. "It is students like Samuel and Shayne that push our school and band program to the next level."
As these two musicians prepare to march alongside the nation's best during the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, they carry with them not just their instruments, but the spirit of Topsail High School and the vibrant community that supports them.
You can watch for Samuel and Shayne during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as it will be broadcast on NBC Thanksgiving morning.
