Principal - Trey Bailey
With 14 years of experience in public education spanning elementary, middle, and high school levels, Mr. Bailey brings a wealth of knowledge and a broad understanding of the educational journey.
Mr. Bailey began his career as a high school teacher and coach in Wake County, North Carolina. He then spent the last decade in southwest Wyoming, where he taught at the elementary and middle school levels for the first four years, all while continuing to coach multiple sports.
After earning his degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Wyoming, Mr. Bailey dedicated the past six years to serving as a middle school assistant principal. In this role, he worked collaboratively with staff, students, and families to create a learning environment where all students could thrive. He firmly believes that a safe, supportive, and collaborative culture is the foundation of a high-functioning school. He places a high value on open communication between teachers, students, and parents, recognizing it as a critical factor in promoting student success.
After ten years away, Mr. Bailey is excited to return to his home state with his wife and two children to be close to his extended family once again. He has already recognized the positive developments at Surf City Elementary and within Pender County Schools, and he is eager to join the professional team and engage with the Surf City community.
Assistant Principal - Ashley Petre
Ashley Petre was named Assistant Principal of Surf City Elementary during the summer of 2023.
A native of Connecticut, Ms. Petre moved to Wilmington in 2016. Ms. Petre earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English and Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Elementary Education from Quinnipiac University. She later earned her Administrative Licensure from UNC-Wilmington in May of 2023.
Ms. Petre’s career as an educator began in a third grade classroom in New London, Connecticut. When she moved to Wilmington, she taught 4th and 5th grade at Rachel Freeman School of Engineering. Ms. Petre eventually became one of the Instructional Coaches and MTSS Coordinators at Rachel Freeman before moving to Winter Park Elementary where she continued this role. She has been named Rookie and Teacher of the Year in New Hanover County.
Ms. Petre is an avid runner and dog lover. You can often find her at the beach, outside on a long run, or spending time with her family. Ms. Petre is committed to providing an equitable learning environment for all students by building and maintaining nurturing relationships. She is excited to join the Surf City family and celebrate all students’ successes.
