Principal - April Perkins

Mrs Perkins, Principal

April Perkins was named Principal of Rocky Point Elementary School in July 2018.

A native of Perquimans County, North Carolina, Mrs. Perkins established a passion for education during her high school years as she was awarded the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship as a Senior at Perquimans County High School.  Mrs. Perkins earned her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2003.  After teaching one year at Chowan Middle School in Tyner, North Carolina, Mrs. Perkins returned to the Wilmington area to teach Physical Education at South Topsail Elementary in 2004.  In 2008, she was voted South Topsail's Teacher of the Year as well as received her National Board Teaching Certification (and renewal in 2017).  She was awarded the North Carolina Principal Fellows Scholarship and attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to receive her Master's Degree in school administration in 2015.  She was recognized as Pender County's Assistant Principal of the Year in 2018 and Principal of the year in 2022.

Mrs. Perkins lives in Leland with husband, Deron, and her two sons, Khalil and Amari.  She also has two older adult sons, Davon & Jalyn, as well as a grandson, Mason.  She most enjoys quality time with her sons, practicing for their various sports and cheering them on from the sidelines.   

She is also the volunteer secretary for her son's local baseball league.  Unplugged, quality time with all of her family vacationing, fishing and going to the beach are also on her lists of favorites.  

Mrs. Perkins is committed to equitable practices and dedicated to ensuring the best opportunities for all students in school and in life.  She is an educator with heart and leads her school in that manner in conjunction with data analysis and collaborative conversations with her staff.
