The week of February 7th-11th places the spotlight on school counselors for School Counselor Appreciation Week. Cape Fear Middle School welcomed Amber Miller as our second counselor this year to team up with Lauren Bowman, who is in her 3rd year with the Grizzly family. Both Ms. Bowman and Ms. Miller have dedicated their time to improving school culture and inspiring students and staff to grow and support each other in the school community.
Ms. Bowman wanted to become a school counselor so that she could “help children be the best students that they can be”. She is inspired when she “can advocate on behalf of the student and teach them how to advocate for themselves”. She attended college at ECU, graduating with her Master’s in Counselor Education in 2019. Her favorite inspirational quote is by Nelson Mandala, “It always seems impossible until it is done”.
Ms. Miller chose her career path “to be someone that students can trust and depend on to help them”, focusing on social/emotional wellness as well as academic and career planning. She is inspired by her students, and in knowing she “can help make a difference in their lives and advocate for them”. She attended the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, IN with a degree in criminal justice and psychology, and is in her last semester at Salem College for her Master’s in School Counseling. Her favorite inspirational quote is “In a world where you can be anything, be kind”.
